Red Sox reacquire Mirabelli

Ever since watching Josh Bard try to catch Tim Wakefield's knuckleball in their first game together I've been saying this move was inevitable. On Sunday night the Red Sox reaquired Doug Mirabelli from the San Diego Padres for Josh Bard, minor-league pitcher Clay Meredith. The Red Sox had traded Mirabelli to Padres for second basemen Mark Lorretta. Shortly after the Padres traded for Mirabelli they signed Mike Piazza to be their starting ctacher and clean-up hitter essentially putting Mirabelli into a back-up role. Bard had been awful trying to master Wakefield's knuckler having already allowed 10 passed balls this season. If the Red Sox wanted any production out of Wakefield this year this move had to be made and quickly. Meredith could turn out to be a good pitcher but this was necessary for this year. Mirabelli is expected to be in the lineup tonight against the Yankees and should expect a heros welcome. The Yankees, according to Buster Olney, were trying to block this move by acquiring Mirabelli but just weren't quick enough. Link below.
